Nice, Monaco, Menton…The Côte d’Azur is a popular destination for many Norwegians. But how many know that the region only became French in 1861? Before 1792, Nice belonged to the Kingdom of Piedmont Sardinia while Menton was linked to the Principality of Monaco. In the fall of that same year, Nice, Monaco and Menton were invaded by French revolutionary troops forming the “Army of the South” (Armée du Midi); it was the beginning of a long brutal occupation and an annexation that did not respect the principles and values of the Declaration of the Human Rights of the Citizen of 1789. It was not until 1814, when Napoleon abdicated, so that these territories regain their sovereignty.
Marie-Christine Stigset, author, tells us about this resistance struggle and the daily life of the population of the Alpes-Maritimes during the French Revolution. She will also introduce the audience to her latest book: Le Barbet du plan du Lion, une histoire de résistance héroïque à Menton sous la Terreur (Editions du Bord du Lot).
