FAQ: French exams

Fransk kulturhus offers a wide range of certifications in French as a foreign language throughout the year to validate French skills, from initial learning to the most advanced levels.

We organise diplomas and tests: diploma in French language studies (DELF), advanced French language diploma (DALF), French knowledge test (TCF).

The DELF-DALF are organized in partnership with Institut français de Norvège. The TCF and DELF-DALF in partnership with France Education International.

These certifications are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), are issued by the French Ministry of National Education and are recognized within the framework of academic, administrative and professional procedures.

Which exams are available to adults?

There are two types of certifications.

  1. French language study diplomas (DELF A1, A2, B1, B2) and advanced French language diplomas (DALF C1, C2): these are official diplomas recognised throughout the world and valid for life.
  2. French knowledge tests (TCF) are language level tests that assess general French language skills:
    1. TCF Tout public is aimed at people whose mother tongue is not French and is recognised by:
      1. university authorities,
      2. the professional world,
      3. the French authorities,
      4. the Quebec authorities,
      5. education centres.
  1. TCF Canada is accredited by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and recognised by the Ministry of Immigration, Francisation and Integration (MIFI) for an immigration application in the province of Quebec.

What exams are available to children and teenagers?

Exams are offered according to their age:

  • 8-12 years old: DELF Prim (A1.1, A1, A2)
  • 13 years and over: DELF Junior (A1, A2, B1, B2)
  • 16 years and over: see exams available to adults

How do I choose the exam best suited to my situation?

Although very different from each other, the DELF and the TCF are both certifications intended for non-French-speaking candidates wishing to validate their skills in French. Taking a French test is indeed useful in certain situations, such as:

  • registration in a French-speaking university or higher education school;
  • application for naturalisation;
  • immigration file;
  • have your skills in French certified in a personal or professional context.

Your choice will of course also be guided by your situation, your age, your motivation, your level, your availability and your need for flexibility.

How can I prepare for the exam?

The candidate is required to find out about the examination procedures. We invite you to read all the information communicated on the France Education International website.

We encourage you to put all the chances on your side by preparing as best you can for the chosen exam. Look at our group and private courses which are all based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and therefore prepare you for official exams.

We also offer 100% online preparation courses for DELF B1 and B2 and TCF Tout Public and Canada.
